Read on to learn the reasons why your Xfinity modem is blinking blue. Get to know how it should behave under normal and abnormal status conditions, and what to do if it gets stuck in such a state.

Xfinity Modem Blinking Blue: What Does it Mean?

Seeing your Xfinity modem blinking blue may make you wonder if your device is encountering an error or malfunctioning. This is especially true if you were not present when the modem was initially set up or have never experienced an ISP-side service outage before.

This blinking blue light simply means your device is in Wireless Protected Setup Mode (WPS). It is a pairing mode when your modem is trying to establish a secure connection to the wireless devices around it.

Under normal circumstances, the blinking blue light on the indicator panel should disappear within a few minutes. Once it finds a secure connection and pairs with a wireless device in the vicinity, the blinking blue light will turn to a solid white.

What If The Flashing Blue Light On My XFinity Modem Doesn’t Disappear?

If the blinking blue light continues to flash for an extended period – that being more than a few minutes, then it could mean something serious. Either it doesn’t connect at all or it immediately loses its recent connection. We can consider this an abnormal circumstance, and it may be caused by the following issues:

  • Your Xfinity modem is stuck in pairing mode. When the blinking blue light on your Xfinity modem does not disappear after a few minutes as it should, it is possible that your modem is stuck in pairing mode. To fix this, you can reset the device and start the pairing process all over again.
  • There are too many wireless devices connected. It is also possible that you may have too many wireless devices connected and/or attempting to connect to the Xfinity modem. This could prevent the device from finding a secure connection with any of them.  To fix this, you can disconnect some of the other wireless devices in your network before attempting to pair the modem again.
  • There is a service outage in your area. Sometimes, Xfinity service outages in your area can interfere with the connectivity of your modem. It could even cause your Xfinity Gateway to go offline completely. To fix this, you should contact your Internet Service Provider and inquire about any known service outages before attempting to pair again.

  • Your modem has loose wires or cables causing a weak connection. If the wiring and cables connected to your Xfinity modem are not properly secured or have been damaged in some way, it can cause a weak connection.
  • Your modem has a faulty splitter that is interrupting the connection. For most modem or internet connection outlets, a splitter is essential. This component breaks down the incoming connection into three. One for your television, another for your phone, and the last one for your modem or Wi-Fi router. If this splitter gets damaged in any way or stops functioning correctly, you will lose access to the rest of the network.
  • It’s possible that your modem is faulty or malfunctioning. In some situations, multiple power surges can cause your Xfinity modem to malfunction, making it prone to connectivity issues.

We are here to help you figure out what exactly is going on with your Xfinity modem lights. Check out the troubleshooting steps we provided in the next section for you to try.

8 Ways to Troubleshoot Your Xfinity Modem Blinking Blue

Xfinity modem - front and back

There are several troubleshooting steps you can take if you find out or suspect any of the abnormal conditions mentioned above. These circumstances are often indicated by your Xfinity modem blinking blue light.

1. WPS Long Button-Press

The first step to try is the WPS Long Button-Press tactic.

Press and hold the WPS button (which is usually located on the back of your modem) for five seconds or more. This will reset all the device’s previous connections, thus allowing it to try to connect again from scratch.

If the Xfinity router blinking blue issue persists, move on to the steps below.

2. Move Your Router Closer to Your Wireless Device

If you think that the Xfinity router is blinking blue because the signal is weak, then you can try moving the router closer to your wireless device. If the distance is causing the connection issue, then restarting the router and putting it back into WPS mode after you’ve moved it, should allow the modem to establish a secure connection.

3. Restart Your Modem Through the Xfinity App or Manually

Turning it off and on again is a tried and true method for troubleshooting electronic devices. It applies to the Xfinity modem as well. You can restart your device manually or through the Xfinity mobile app if you have it.

Xfinity Mobile App

  1. Launch the mobile app on your IOS or Android device.

restart Xfinity modem from Xfinity app
  1. Wait until your Xfinity modem restarts.
  2. When the flashing blue light on your Xfinity modem begins, leave it for a few minutes to see if it pairs successfully and turns into a solid white.
  3. If it doesn’t, then restarting did not fix the stuck pairing mode issue.

Manually

  1. Walk over to the router and unplug it from the power supply.
  2. Unplug the cords from both the wall and the back of the modem.
  3. Wait for 2-5 minutes and then reconnect it.
  4. Wait for the modem/router to boot up and see if it pairs successfully and the indicator light turns into a solid white.
  5. If it doesn’t, then restarting it did not fix the stuck pairing mode issue.

4. Power Cycle Your Xfinity Modem With a Soft Reset

A soft reset will power cycle your modem and router, but it won’t erase any settings.

  1. Power down the modem/router by holding the power button down for 10 seconds.
  2. Unplug the power chord from the power supply and wait 5-10 seconds.
  3. Then plug the cable back into the power supply and switch on the router.
  4. Wait to see if it forms a stable connection.

5. Look for Loose/Damaged Connections

Check for any loose or damaged connections and make sure everything is properly connected. If the power connection or data cables are loose, this can cause a poor internet connection and/or no internet at all.

Here are a few simple steps to check your connections:

  1. Unplug all of the chords/connections and look for physical damage in the wires, router ports, splitter, and wall jack. Make sure that there isn’t any moisture or cord fraying going on.
  2. If there is damage present, replace the connective cables. Then restart the router once the new wires/cables are securely in place.

6. Restart Your Home Network Entirely

If you are rocking a modem and router setup or a combination setup, then you need to troubleshoot the connection between the two. This could be causing the flashing blue light on your Xfinity modem.

The best way to do this is to restart your home network entirely. Here’s how:

  1. Power down your router and disconnect it from the modem.
  2. Remove the cable from the modem that leads to the power socket.
  3. Remove the ethernet cable that connects the router and modem.
  4. Wait for 10+ minutes to let them sit.
  5. Then reconnect the modem to your power socket.
  6. Plug the router back into the modem.
  7. Run the ethernet cable back between the two, and power on both.
  8. Wait until the connection is restored between the two.

If resetting the home network like this doesn’t work, then you’ll need to either do a factory reset, contact customer support or replace your equipment.

In case you cannot connect to a Wi-Fi network despite the fact that everything seems to be in order, we have an article that specifically addresses this issue.

Please take note that if you run a factory reset on your Xfinity modem, you will have to reconfigure it and all its settings before establishing an internet connection with your devices.

There are a few ways of doing this, the easiest of which is pressing the reset button on the back of your Xfinity modem.

  1. Pull your router out from the wall or down from the shelf it’s on, and flip it so you can get a full view of its back end.
