So is there anyway to handle an exception in such a way that i am able to manage to keep string after scan.nextline().<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The real problem is that you are not handling the case where nextLine()<\/code> returns an empty<\/strong> string. You cannot<\/em> retrieve characters from an empty string – there is no characters present!<\/p>\n

String x = scan.nextLine(); \nif (!x.isEmpty()) { \/\/ <-- add this\n    char ch = x.charAt(0);\n    \/\/ use ch as needed...\n}\nelse {\n    \/\/ do something else ...\n}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
If you must have the char<\/code> as a string<\/code>, you can do this:<\/p>\n
char ch = x.charAt(0);\nstring s = String.valueOf(ch);\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
Or this:<\/p>\n
string s = x.substring(0, 1);\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
