I’m assuming the input is always two columns, the first column contains
\nthe column headers of the output repeated over and over, and that the
\noutput may contain one or more columns.<\/p>\n

$ cat t.awk\n{ sep = (FNR % n == 0) ? \"\\n\" : \" \" }\nNR==FNR { printf $1 sep; if (sep == \"\\n\") nextfile; next; }\n{ printf $2 sep }\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
The number of output columns is set with -v<\/code> when invoking awk. Note also
\nthat the input file needs to be provided twice on the command line as the
\nscript does a quick initial pass to print out the output column headers
\nbefore starting over to print the data (too lazy to deal with arrays).<\/p>\n
Two-column output:<\/p>\n
$ cat file.txt\na 1\nb 2\na 3\nb 4\na 5\nb 6\n\n$ awk -v n=2 -f t.awk file.txt file.txt\na b\n1 2\n3 4\n5 6\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
