If the host environment is not capable of<br \/>\n  supplying strings with letters in both uppercase and lowercase, the implementation<br \/>\n  shall ensure that the strings are received in lowercase.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 If the value of <code>argc<\/code> is greater than zero, the string pointed to by <code>argv[0]<\/code><br \/>\n  represents the program name; <code>argv[0][0]<\/code> shall be the null character if the<br \/>\n  program name is not available from the host environment. <strong>If the value of argc is<br \/>\n  greater than one, the strings pointed to by <code>argv[1]<\/code> through <code>argv[argc-1]<\/code><br \/>\n  represent the program parameters.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The snippet above is to simply print the supplied <em>program parameters.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><code>*argv  !=  NULL<\/code> is to check that we did not reach the end of <code>argv<\/code> array.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><code>printf(\"%s\\n\", *(argv++));<\/code> , let&#8217;s break it down,<\/p>\n<pre><code>printf(\"%s\\n\", *argv));  \/\/print the string pointed to by `argv`\nargv++;                  \/\/increment argv to point to the next string \n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<p>Now, coming to the question in &#8220;title&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>[&#8230;] (run without any command line arguments)?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>well, in that case, the <code>argc<\/code> has a value of <code>1<\/code>, and only <code>argv[0]<\/code> hold a pointer to a string containing the program name. <code>argv[1]<\/code> points to <code>NULL<\/code> (or similar null pointer).<\/p>\n<p>So, in the loop<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First condition check is success (<code>*argv<\/code> == <code>argv[0]<\/code> which is not NULL), it prints the program name<\/li>\n<li><code>argv<\/code> is incremented as a side effect of the post-increment.<\/li>\n<li>Second iteration, <code>*argv<\/code> is the same as <code>argv[1]<\/code> now, which is NULL, condition is false, and it hits the final <code>return<\/code> statement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<p>The question in the body<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>this should give the compile time error because of  <code>*(argv++)<\/code>, is not it?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>No, it is not.
