First off, note that if<\/code> and else<\/code> always apply to the single statement that follows them. You can use { }<\/code> to group multiple statements into a single compound statement, but the conditional then applies to the single { ... }<\/code> statement.<\/p>\n

Consider these two equivalent statements:<\/p>\n

if (foo) {\n  bar();\n}\n\nif (foo)\n  bar();\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
In the first the if<\/code> applies to the { }<\/code> block (which contains bar();<\/code>) while in the second it applies directly to the bar();<\/code> statement. What may not be immediately apparent is that { }<\/code> is not the only way to create a compound statement. In fact, if<\/code> is another compound expression, hence it can be the direct child of another if<\/code> or else<\/code> statement. For instance:<\/p>\n
if (foo)\n  if (bar) {\n    baz();\n  }\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
Is perfectly valid (if hard to read) and is equivalent to:<\/p>\n
if (foo) {\n  if (bar) {\n    baz();\n  }\n}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
The same concept is true of else<\/code> – whatever statement follows it will be applied if the preceding conditional is false, even if that statement is itself a compound statement!<\/p>\n
if (foo) {\n  bar();\n}\nelse\n  if (baz) {\n    biff();\n  }\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
The else<\/code> applies to the whole if (baz)<\/code> block, and since it’s only a single (compound) statement there’s no need for an additional { }<\/code> block.<\/p>\n
The exact grammar is specified in JLS \u00a719<\/a>, and the grammar of the different forms of the if<\/code> statement are detailed in JLS \u00a714.9<\/a>. Notice that there’s no mention of else if<\/code> because it’s not a formal part of the language, simply a (intentional) consequence of the grammar.<\/p>\n

All of that said, the real<\/em> reason we don’t format the code the way you’re describing is simply because it’s harder to read. It’s much simpler to think of else if<\/code> as a single keyword and indent your code accordingly. Some other languages (e.g. Python) use a single keyword like elif<\/code> to simplify the grammar, but it’s not really necessary.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
