Standard practice is to check for the username\/password combination in one shot:<\/p>\n<pre><code>mysql = \"SELECT 1 FROM [User] WHERE UserName=? AND Password=?\";\nOleDbCommand CheckUser = new OleDbCommand(mysql, con);\n\/\/ Add OleDbParameters here with the correct type\/length\nCheckUser.Parameters.Add(\"@userName\", OleDbType.Char, 20).Value = tbUser.Text ;\nCheckUser.Parameters.Add(\"@password\", OleDbType.Char, 20).Value = tbPass.Text ;\n\nint temp = Convert.ToInt32(CheckUser.ExecuteScalar().ToString());\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>and adding parameters to the command with the username and password values.  That way hackers can&#8217;t determine valid usernames without knowing the password.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>This block:<\/p>\n<pre><code>    mysql2 = \"SELECT * FROM [User] WHERE Password='\" + tbPass.Text + \"'\";\n    OleDbCommand Pass = new OleDbCommand(mysql2, con);\n    string Password = Pass.ExecuteScalar().ToString();\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Will return the <em>first<\/em> column form the <em>first<\/em> row of the result set.
