.equals()<\/code> tests for value equality (whether they are logically “equal”).<\/p>\n

Objects.equals()<\/a> checks for null<\/code> before calling .equals()<\/code> so you don’t have to (available as of JDK7, also available in Guava<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Consequently, if you want to test whether two strings have the same value you will probably want to use Objects.equals()<\/code>.<\/p>\n

\/\/ These two have the same value\nnew String(\"test\").equals(\"test\") \/\/ --> true \n\n\/\/ ... but they are not the same object\nnew String(\"test\") == \"test\" \/\/ --> false \n\n\/\/ ... neither are these\nnew String(\"test\") == new String(\"test\") \/\/ --> false \n\n\/\/ ... but these are because literals are interned by \n\/\/ the compiler and thus refer to the same object\n\"test\" == \"test\" \/\/ --> true \n\n\/\/ ... string literals are concatenated by the compiler\n\/\/ and the results are interned.\n\"test\" == \"te\" + \"st\" \/\/ --> true\n\n\/\/ ... but you should really just call Objects.equals()\nObjects.equals(\"test\", new String(\"test\")) \/\/ --> true\nObjects.equals(null, \"test\") \/\/ --> false\nObjects.equals(null, null) \/\/ --> true\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
You almost always<\/strong> want to use Objects.equals()<\/code>. In the rare<\/strong> situation where you know<\/strong> you’re dealing with interned<\/a> strings, you can<\/em> use ==<\/code>.<\/p>\n

Moreover, a string literal always refers to the same<\/em> instance of class String<\/code>. This is because string literals – or, more generally, strings that are the values of constant expressions (\u00a715.28<\/a>) – are “interned” so as to share unique instances, using the method String.intern<\/code>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Other Methods To Consider<\/h3>\n
String.equalsIgnoreCase()<\/a> value equality that ignores case. Beware, however, that this method can have unexpected results in various locale-related cases, see this question.<\/p>\n
String.contentEquals()<\/a> compares the content of the String<\/code> with the content of any CharSequence<\/code> (available since Java 1.5). Saves you from having to turn your StringBuffer, etc into a String before doing the equality comparison, but leaves the null checking to you.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
