In the <strong>rare<\/strong> situation where you <strong>know<\/strong> you&#8217;re dealing with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.oracle.com\/javase\/8\/docs\/api\/java\/lang\/String.html#intern--\">interned<\/a> strings, you <em>can<\/em> use <code>==<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>From <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.oracle.com\/javase\/specs\/jls\/se8\/html\/jls-3.html#jls-3.10.5\">JLS 3.10.5. <em>String Literals<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Moreover, a string literal always refers to the <em>same<\/em> instance of class <code>String<\/code>. This is because string literals &#8211; or, more generally, strings that are the values of constant expressions (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.oracle.com\/javase\/specs\/jls\/se8\/html\/jls-15.html#jls-15.28\">\u00a715.28<\/a>) &#8211; are &#8220;interned&#8221; so as to share unique instances, using the method <code>String.intern<\/code>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Similar examples can also be found in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.oracle.com\/javase\/specs\/jls\/se8\/html\/jls-3.html#d5e1634\">JLS 3.10.5-1<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Methods To Consider<\/h3>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.oracle.com\/javase\/8\/docs\/api\/java\/lang\/String.html#equalsIgnoreCase-java.lang.String-\">String.equalsIgnoreCase()<\/a> value equality that ignores case. Beware, however, that this method can have unexpected results in various locale-related cases, see this question.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.oracle.com\/javase\/8\/docs\/api\/java\/lang\/String.html#contentEquals-java.lang.CharSequence-\">String.contentEquals()<\/a> compares the content of the <code>String<\/code> with the content of any <code>CharSequence<\/code> (available since Java 1.5).
