T *t = new T;\n\/\/     ^^^^^\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
This is a declaration of t<\/code> of type T*<\/code>. It is being initialized by the expression after the =<\/code>. The entire new T<\/code> part is the new-expression<\/em> in this initializer.<\/p>\n
The new-expression<\/em> causes memory to be allocated for an object of type T<\/code> and then that object is constructed in that space. The new-expression<\/em> returns a pointer to that object. That is, after the new-expression<\/em> has been evaluated, the line now looks like:<\/p>\n
T *t = returned_pointer;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
I assume you’re using 0x0FF00<\/code> as an example memory address – in which case, you can imagine the line has become:<\/p>\n
T *t = 0x0FF00; \/\/ Note: this wouldn't actually compile because 0x0FF00 is an integer literal\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
The pointer t<\/code> is now initialized with that memory address.<\/p>\n
You might be confused by what exactly a new-expression<\/em> does. It has these two steps:<\/p>\n

    It calls the appropriate allocation function (typically operator new<\/code>), passing the size of the memory it needs to store an object of type T<\/code>. operator new<\/code> allocates that memory and returns an address that points at that location.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    It then initializes an object of type T<\/code> in that space.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n
