As @Pavan said in the comment, your conditional might be wrong. It should be ==<\/code> instead of =<\/code>. =<\/code> is the assignment.<\/p>\n

if @weight.nominal + x == required ... end\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
Here what happens “behind the scene” with your original code: <\/p>\n
    \n
  1. required<\/code> is assigned to x<\/code>.<\/li>\n
  2. Add x to @weight.nominal<\/code>  (@weight.nominal + x<\/code>)<\/li>\n
  3. Evaluate the result from step 2, which is always true.<\/li>\n
  4. Execute the code within if<\/code> block, which is weights << @weight.id<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    Eventually, your x<\/code>‘s value is lost, it will take required<\/code> value instead and your conditional is useless since it always true.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
