{"id":26474,"date":"2022-12-18T01:28:29","date_gmt":"2022-12-17T19:58:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jassweb.com\/solved\/solved-how-to-create-a-static-variable-shared-amongst-instances-of-closed-constructed-generic-types\/"},"modified":"2022-12-18T01:28:29","modified_gmt":"2022-12-17T19:58:29","slug":"solved-how-to-create-a-static-variable-shared-amongst-instances-of-closed-constructed-generic-types","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jassweb.com\/solved\/solved-how-to-create-a-static-variable-shared-amongst-instances-of-closed-constructed-generic-types\/","title":{"rendered":"[Solved] How to create a static variable shared amongst instances of closed constructed generic types?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"answer-58163871\" class=\"answer js-answer accepted-answer js-accepted-answer\" data-answerid=\"58163871\" data-parentid=\"58162264\" data-score=\"4\" data-position-on-page=\"1\" data-highest-scored=\"1\" data-question-has-accepted-highest-score=\"1\" itemprop=\"acceptedAnswer\" itemscope itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/Answer\">\n<div class=\"post-layout\">\n<div class=\"votecell post-layout--left\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"answercell post-layout--right\">\n<div class=\"s-prose js-post-body\" itemprop=\"text\">\n<p>There&#8217;s 3 ways that I can think of that would work for you:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Create a non-generic base class holding the shared field(s)<\/li>\n<li>Create a non-generic separate class holding the shared field(s)<\/li>\n<li>Create a non-generic type that <em>holds<\/em> these shared values, and reuse this inside your generic ones<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For the third one, since you say you don&#8217;t really want option 1 or 2, here&#8217;s an example:<\/p>\n<pre><code>public abstract class Shared\n{\n    private readonly static Dictionary&lt;Guid, object&gt; _Variables\n        = new Dictionary&lt;Guid, object&gt;();\n\n    protected void SetValue&lt;T&gt;(Guid key, T value)\n    {\n        lock (_Variables)\n            _Variables[key] = value;\n    }\n\n    protected T GetValue&lt;T&gt;(Guid key)\n    {\n        object temp;\n        lock (_Variables)\n            if (!_Variables.TryGetValue(key, out temp))\n                return default;\n\n        return (T)temp;\n    }\n}\n\npublic class Shared&lt;T&gt; : Shared\n{\n    private readonly Guid _Key;\n\n    public Shared(Guid key)\n    {\n        _Key = key;\n    }\n\n    public T Value\n    {\n        get =&gt; GetValue&lt;T&gt;(_Key);\n        set =&gt; SetValue&lt;T&gt;(_Key, value);\n    }\n}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>You would use this like this:<\/p>\n<pre><code>public class MyClass&lt;T&gt;\n{\n    private static readonly Shared&lt;string&gt; _Shared\n        = new Shared&lt;string&gt;(Guid.Parse(\"521ecaba-2a5e-43f2-90e0-fda38a32618c\"));\n\n    public void Set(string value)\n    {\n        _Shared.Value = value;\n    }\n\n    public void Get()\n    {\n        Console.WriteLine(_Shared.Value);\n    }\n}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>The Set\/Get methods of that MyClass was used to test that a value set through one closed type is available through another, like this:<\/p>\n<pre><code>var mc1 = new MyClass&lt;int&gt;();\nvar mc2 = new MyClass&lt;string&gt;();\n\nmc1.Set(\"Test\");\nmc2.Get();\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>This will output <code>Test<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>Even though all closed types of <code>MyClass&lt;T&gt;<\/code> will have their own static <code>Shared&lt;T&gt;<\/code> instance, the <em>value<\/em> contained in that instance will be backed by a shared dictionary that is shared between all types using this <code>Shared&lt;T&gt;<\/code> type.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>Personally I would recommend going with the static non-generic base class though:<\/p>\n<pre><code>public abstract class MyClass\n{\n    protected static string _Shared;\n}\n\npublic class MyClass&lt;T&gt; : MyClass\n{\n    public void Set(string value)\n    {\n        _Shared = value;\n    }\n\n    public void Get()\n    {\n        Console.WriteLine(_Shared);\n    }\n}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>If you prefer the &#8220;base class&#8221;, that is, the type holding the shared value, to be unavailable, and not much with base classes (which wouldn&#8217;t work with structs either), you can easily just make it a completely separate class:<\/p>\n<pre><code>internal static class MyClassShared\n{\n    public static string Shared;\n}\n\npublic class MyClass&lt;T&gt;\n{\n    public void Set(string value)\n    {\n        MyClassShared.Shared = value;\n    }\n\n    public void Get()\n    {\n        Console.WriteLine(MyClassShared.Shared);\n    }\n}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"mt24\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>            <span class=\"d-none\" itemprop=\"commentCount\">1<\/span> <\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[ad_2]<\/p>\n<p>solved How to create a static variable shared amongst instances of closed constructed generic types?
