First, you have an infinite loop there. If you plan to play the whole game in that function, you should rename it to something like PlayGame<\/code>. I will assume you’ll call the function once per turn, and the only reason for the loop is in case the user entered illegal input and you’re retrying it.<\/p>\n

Here’s a way to do what you’re doing above.<\/p>\n

class Chessgame:\n    white_turn = False\n    def PlayerTurn(self):\n        self.white_turn = not self.white_turn\n        done = False\n        while not done:\n            if self.white_turn:\n                print(\"White Player's turn\")\n            else\n                print(\"Black Player's turn\")\n            ... logic to get and verify player's input here ...\n            done = True\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
But that doesn’t do what you asked, which is a function to return 0 or 1 based on whose turn it is.  Here’s code that allows you to call a function to tell you whose turn it is (but without 0 or 1), and you can call that function any number of times, with another function to advance to the next player:<\/p>\n
class Chessgame:\n    turn = 1\n    def whiteTurn(self):\n        return (self.turn & 1) == 1\n\n    def endTurn(self):\n        turn += 1\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
whiteTurn<\/code> returns True if it’s white’s turn, or False if it’s black’s turn.  Call endTurn()<\/code> whenever the current player’s turn is over.  (turn & 1<\/code> evaluates to 1 if turn is odd, zero otherwise.  &<\/code> is the bitwise AND operator.)<\/p>\n
Another improvement would be to have Player objects, like this:<\/p>\n
class Player:\n    def __init__(self, color):\n        self.color = color\n\n    def __str__(self):\n        return self.color\n\nclass Chessgame:\n    players = (Player(\"white\"), Player(\"black\"))\n    turn = 0\n\n    def player(self):\n        return self.players[self.turn & 1]\n\n    def endTurn(self):\n        print(\"Turn over for\", self.player())\n        self.turn += 1\n        print(\"Turn starts for\", self.player())\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
I wouldn’t actually put the print statements in endTurn()<\/code> but provided them to show you how the player object can be used.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
