It is bad practice to use regular expressions to parse HTML. Instead, use the tools provided in PHP that are specifically geared toward parsing HTML, namely DomDocument<\/code>[doc<\/a>].<\/p>\n

\/\/ create a new DomDocument object\n$doc = new DOMDocument();\n\n\/\/ load the HTML into the DomDocument object (this would be your source HTML)\n$doc->loadHTML('\n    <table>\n        <tr>\n            <td width=\"7\" height=\"50\" nowrap>\n                <img src=\"https:\/\/stackoverflow.com\/images\/img_1.png\" width=\"7\" height=\"50\" alt=\"\" \/>\n            <\/td>\n        <\/tr>\n    <\/table>\n');\n\n\/\/Loop through each <td> tag in the dom \nforeach($doc->getElementsByTagName('td') as $cell) {\n    \/\/ grab any images in this cell\n    $images = $cell->getElementsByTagName('img');\n    if ($images->length >= 1) { \/\/ if an image is found\n        $image = $images->item(0);\n        \/\/ add the 'background' property to the cell, use the 'src' property\n        $cell->setAttribute('background', $image->getAttribute('src'));\n        \/\/ remove the image\n        $cell->removeChild($image);\n    }\n}\necho $doc->saveHTML();\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
