In C, a string is a sequence of character values including a zero-valued terminator – the string \"hello\"<\/code> is represented as the sequence {'h', 'e', 'l','l', 'o', 0}<\/code>.<\/p>\n

Strings (including string literals) are stored in arrays of character type:<\/p>\n

char str[] = \"hello\";\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
Except when it is the operand of the sizeof<\/code> or unary &<\/code> operators, or is a string literal used to initialize a character array in a declaration (like above), an expression<\/em> of type “N-element array of T<\/code>” will be converted (“decay”) to an expression of type “pointer to T<\/code>” and the value of the expression will be the address of the first element of the array.<\/p>\n
So if you call a function like<\/p>\n
foo( str );\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
what the function actually receives is a char *<\/code>, not an array of char<\/code>, so the prototype will be<\/p>\n

In the context of a function parameter declaration, T a[N]<\/code> and T a[]<\/code> are adjusted<\/em> to T *a<\/code>, so you could also write the prototype as<\/p>\n
