Both ||<\/code> and &&<\/code> force left to right operation. Both fully evaluate their LHS operand and apply any side effects before evaluating the RHS. Both short-circuit<\/em>; if the result of the expression can be determined from the LHS, the RHS is not evaluated at all.<\/p>\n

For ||<\/code>, if the LHS evaluates to a non-zero value, then the RHS is not evaluated (true OR x<\/code> is always true<\/code>).<\/p>\n

For &&<\/code>, if the LHS evaluates to a zero value, then the RHS is not evaluated (false AND x<\/code> is always false<\/code>).<\/p>\n

&&<\/code> has higher precedence than ||<\/code>, which has higher precedence than assignment, so the expression is parsed<\/em> as<\/p>\n

and evaluated<\/em> as follows:<\/p>\n

  1. ++i<\/code> is evaluated first (||<\/code> forces left-to-right evaluation) and the side effect of incrementing i<\/code> is applied;<\/li>\n
  2. Since i<\/code> is initially -3<\/code>, ++i<\/code> evaluates to -2<\/code>;<\/li>\n
  3. Since ++i<\/code> evaluates to a non-zero value, the RHS expression ++j && ++k<\/code> is not evaluated at all1<\/sup>;<\/li>\n
  4. The result of an operation involving ||<\/code> or &&<\/code> is a boolean value (either 0<\/code> or 1<\/code>) – since ++i<\/code> is non-zero, ++i || ++j && ++k<\/code> evaluates to 1;<\/li>\n
  5. 1<\/code> is assigned to m<\/code>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
