As long as you’re bothered with the for<\/code> loop syntax,<\/p>\n

 for ( ; lastheight < height ; lastheight++)\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
is perfectly valid, as long as lastheight<\/code> is defined and initialized previously.<\/p>\n
Quoting C11<\/code>, chapter \u00a76.8.5.3<\/p>\n

for ( clause-1 ; expression-2 ; expression-3 ) statement\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
[…] Both clause-1<\/em> and expression-3<\/em> can be omitted. An omitted expression-2<\/em> is replaced by a

Regarding the reason<\/em> for defining lastheight<\/code> outside the for<\/code> loop, one thing can be mentioned, that, for a construct like<\/p>\n
 for ( int lastheight = 0 ; lastheight < height ; lastheight++)  {...} \/\/C99 and above\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
limits the scope<\/em> of lastheight<\/code> to the for loop body. If you want lastheight<\/code> to be used after<\/em> (outside the scope of) the loop body, you must have the definition outside the loop.<\/p>\n
Also, if my memory serves correctly, before C99, declaration of a variable was not possible inside the for<\/code> statement, anyway. So, the way to go was<\/p>\n
 int lastheight;\n for ( lastheight = 0 ; lastheight < height ; lastheight++)  {...}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
