When you declare char string[]=\"Hello\"<\/code> you declare an array of characters.<\/p>\n

string<\/code> points to the first element of the array. *<\/code> is known as the dereferencing operator.<\/p>\n

Suppose ptr<\/code> is an integer pointer. *ptr<\/code> will give you the content of the memory location pointed by the pointer ptr<\/code>. At the time of declaration you have to declare it as int *ptr<\/code> so that the compiler knows that ptr is a pointer variable(hence the asterix there).<\/p>\n

when you execute printf(\"first character is %c\", *my_pointer);<\/code> the function expects a character corresponding to %c<\/code>. The declaration char *string<\/code> and char string[]<\/code> are roughly(not completely) equivalent. my_pointer<\/code> is a character type pointer. *my_pointer<\/code> dereferences my_pointer<\/code>. In other words *my_pointer<\/code> gives you the content of my_pointer<\/code>ie the first character in your string. <\/p>\n

However a %s<\/code> expects a string (a character array, which is basically a char pointer) as the corresponding argument in printf<\/code>. *my_pointer<\/code> is a character. my_pointer<\/code> can be treated as a string. Also print<\/code> will treat the argument as a string and print the who;e thing till \\0<\/code>.<\/p>\n

my_pointer=array_of_words<\/code> “assigns” the value of array_of_words<\/code> to my_pointer<\/code>. <\/p>\n

array_of_words[]<\/code> is an array, so the value of array_of_words<\/code> is basically the memory address of the first element of the array(notice the absence of []). In effect my_pointer<\/code> now points to the first element of the array.<\/p>\n
