But in this case, <code>s<\/code> is uninitialized.  So <code>gets<\/code> tries to dereference an uninitialized pointer.  This invokes <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Undefined_behavior\">undefined behavior<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you were to set <code>s<\/code> to point to a preexisting array or if you used <code>malloc<\/code> to allocate space, then you can write to it successfully.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, if <code>s<\/code> is defined as an array, it decays to a pointer to the first element of the array when passed to <code>gets<\/code>.  Then <code>gets<\/code> is able to write to the array.<\/p>\n<p>Note however that <code>gets<\/code> is unsafe because it makes no attempt to verify the size of the buffer you pass to it.
