If that is not always true, you might need a more complex solution, but if that&#8217;s enough for you, the following should work:<\/p>\n<pre><code>$expr=\"C++ AND ((UML OR Python) OR (not Perl))\";\n\n\/\/ remove tokens that will not be replaced, here `(`, `)`, and `not`\n$trimmed = str_replace(['(', ')', 'not'], ['', '', ''], $expr);\n\n\/\/ split string based on the keywords `AND` and `OR` (case insensitive)\n\/\/ keywords will also not be replaced\n$tokens = preg_split('\/AND|OR\/i', $trimmed);\n\n\/\/ create replacement tokens without leading\/trailing whitespace\n$replacementTokens = [];\nforeach ($tokens as &amp;$token) {\n    $token = trim($token);\n    $replacementTokens[] = \"skill=$token\";\n}\n\n\/\/ replace tokens and construct the query\n$where = str_replace($tokens, $replacementTokens, $expr);\n$query = \"SELECT * FROM candidates WHERE $where\";\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>As said, this solution might not work if you need more complex behaviour. You also might need to extend the keyword lists.
