The printf<\/code> function has the following declaration:<\/p>\n

int printf(const char *format, ...);\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
The first argument must be a pointer to a char<\/code> array, but any additional arguments can be of any type, so it’s not a compiler error if a format specifier mismatches the parameter (although it is<\/em> undefined behavior).<\/p>\n
This still works however because of what %c<\/code> expects.  From the man page:<\/p>\n
\n
If no l modifier is present, the int argument is converted to an
\n                unsigned char<\/strong>, and the resulting character is written.  If an  l
\n                modifier  is  present,  the  wint_t (wide character) argument is
\n                converted to a multibyte sequence by a call  to  the  wcrtomb(3)
\n                function, with a conversion state starting in the initial state,
\n                and the resulting multibyte string is written.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
From the above passage, %c<\/code> actually expects an int<\/code> and converts it to an unsigned char<\/code> for printing.  So if that’s the case why does passing an actual char<\/code> work?  That is because of integer promotions<\/strong>.  Any integer type smaller than int<\/code> is promoted to int<\/code> anyplace an int<\/code> can be used.  Since printf<\/code> is variadic it can’t check the types of its arguments, so a char<\/code> passed to printf<\/code> will get promoted to int<\/code> when the function is called.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
