It represents some &#8220;starting&#8221; number.<\/li>\n<li><code>0<\/code> represents the &#8220;stopping&#8221; number.<\/li>\n<li><code>-1<\/code> represents the &#8220;step&#8221; number. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These come together in <code>range(len(alist) - 1, 0, -1)<\/code> to say &#8220;count from 7 to 0, backwards &#8211; one negative step at a time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<pre><code>for i in range(passnum):\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>When <code>range()<\/code> is only passed one argument (a number), it counts from 0 to that number.
