As stated in the linked post MakeValid<\/code> is a database function<\/strong><\/a>, which means that it can be executed only during querying the database.<\/p>\n

It is 1-to-1 similar to the PostGIS<\/code> usage of ST_MakeValid<\/code> which cannot be executed outside of a table query (cannot exist autonomously).<\/p>\n

When you create the np<\/code> object, and then you try to do:<\/p>\n

np.polygon = MakeValid(np.polygon)\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
You are essentially trying to apply a database function to an instance of the ‘MyModel’ class which isn’t supposed to work! (as it does not)<\/p>\n

What you can do:<\/p>\n

  1. \n
    You can create a query to update a specific table row:<\/p>\n
    np = MyModel.objects.filter(id=np.id).update(polygon=MakeValid('polygon'))\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
    Note:<\/em>  The object with id=np.id<\/code>‘s polygon, will be updated in the
    \ndatabase permanently with that method.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    You can utilize the GEOSGeometry.buffer()<\/code><\/a>:<\/p>\n
    Using polygon.buffer(0)<\/code> can tidy up most of the polygon irregularities (it can even solve some types of “bowtie”\/self-intersecting polygons)<\/p>\n
    np.polygon.valid          # False\nnp.polygon.buffer(0)      # Make valid with buffer(0)\nnp.polygon.valid          # True\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n

    Finally, you can use Shapely<\/code><\/a> and create a shapely polygon for your calculations which you can make valid with the same method as above (both Shapely’s buffer<\/code><\/a> and GeoDjango’s buffer<\/code><\/a> use GEOS<\/code> library):<\/p>\n
